How to Avoid that New Car Smell

June 1, 2017 - Reading time: 8 minutes

Buying a car is often a dream come true. With a new car often comes that new car smell. At first, it could have some appeal. But it can become a nuisance and get old fast! In fact, the odor isn't even healthy for car drivers and their passengers because it can cause respiratory problems down the line.

What’s causes the peculiar new car smell?

  • Plastic Covers

  • Car Polish

  • Leather

  • Glass Cleaners

  • Adhesives and Sealers

  • Lubricants and Gasoline

Popular ways to help with that  new car smell:

  • Car Freshener: It’s recommended that automobile owners use fresheners with a lemon fragrance. It won’t totally mask the smell but it is sure to make it more tolerable

  • Deodorizing Spray: Deodorizing sprays can cover the odor of that new car smell. They vary in price and can be sprayed inside your vehicle. The deodorizing spray will remove the odor completely or lessen it significantly.

  • Ionizer: An ionizer is a device that releases ions to mask strong odors. Buy an ionizer and turn it on inside your car for several days.

Also, consider these “more creative” ways to minimize the new car odor:

  • You can speed up the process of removing the smell from a new car by leaving the vehicle in the hot sun with the windows cracked. You can also leave the heat on for a few hours.

  • Place baking soda in the car to absorb some of the chemical odors.

  • Keep the vent in your automobile set to ‘fresh air’ rather than re-circulate’.

  • Put a container of vinegar (diluted with water) inside the car.

  • Place scented dryer sheets under the front seats.

  • Keep the car in an open area with plenty of air flow, as opposed to a garage with no air circulation.

  • Make yourself a natural air freshener with an orange pomander. A video showing this DIY project can be found here. But be careful! You don’t want to attract yellowjackets, fruit flies, and other unwanted guests in your car.

What other tips do we have for you and your new car?

  • Make sure to put the HVAC system into the recirculation position when you turn on the air conditioner. Otherwise, excess condensation will form on the HVAC evaporator core which can lead to mold growth. And that's a whole new set of smells and problems on its own!

  • Also, the only time you should smell gasoline inside of your new car is when you brought some in there yourself. Like from a chainsaw or a portable gas can. Very rarely, after you refill the new car’s gas tank you might get a whiff. Otherwise, you've got a serious problem. And that is why they have three-year 36,000-mile warranties on new cars.

For those of you who really do like the smell of a new car but can’t afford to buy one right now, you can always purchase an air freshener with the “New Car Smell” scent. We promise not to make any judgment about it.  :-)
